March 2015 Superintendent Newsletter

Dear USD #416 Wildcat Family,

As many of you know, registered voters will soon have the opportunity to participate in a special mail in ballot to maintain our current funding of the Local Option Budget (LOB). Currently, our LOB is at 33% of the general fund. In order to maintain it at this level, the district must conduct a special mail in ballot. By voting yes on the ballot, each voter is allowing the district to maintain the current funding with NO tax increase to home owners or business owners. Under the current funding formula, there would be no tax increase for the successful passage of the mail in ballot. As you may have heard, Governor Brownback is interested in changing the finance formula for schools. At this time, no one knows what the new formula may look like in the future. I do not know what the new formula would do to our district’s funding. I can only tell you what I know at this time. The current funding formula has been in place for many years. My hope would be that the new formula would not cause USD #416 to lose more money as our district has lost funding over the past years.

On the front page of our website, you will find a tab called, “Upcoming Local Option Election.” If you click on this tab, it will provide you with the needed information for the election. I also held a special community meeting on Thursday, February 26, 2015. If you were unable to attend, but have questions, please feel free to contact me at the district office.

On or about March 2nd, all registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail. It is important that registered voters read the contents of the packet carefully. Once finished voting, it is important that voters know the ballot must be returned to the Miami County Clerk’s Office by noon on March 13, 2015. My suggestion would be to vote and return the ballot as soon as it arrives at your home to reduce the chance of the ballot being misplaced or not sent back to the Miami County Clerk’s Office.

We have a great community and the support that is provided to our school system continues to be strong. I am confident our community will show continued support by supporting the LOB funding.

All My Best!
