February 2015 Superintendent Newsletter
Dear USD #416 Wildcat Family,
Thanks to all staff, students, and parents for a wonderful start to our second semester. I know there are always some bumps in the road when school begins each semester, but the support and patience from everyone is greatly appreciated! As you know, it will be May before we know it!
In the next few months, you will be hearing more information about our upcoming mail in ballot for our Local Option Budget (LOB). Currently, our LOB is at 33% of our general fund. In order to keep the funding at the same level, the district must do a special mail in ballot to all registered voters. According to current legislation, the voters cannot decide the issue at the polls. The election must be through a special mail in ballot. The LOB is a critical component of our school district’s finance. It supports salaries, programs, transportation, technology, and other key areas of our district. If the mail ballot is not successful, the district will lose around $220,000. By maintaining the 33% LOB and checking YES on the ballot, you are agreeing to the current support of our schools with NO additional tax dollars.
As you know, education finance is being heavily scrutinized at the state level. The governor has proposed to overhaul the finance formula. As I write this letter, I do not know exactly what that means for our local district. I fear that there may be future cuts. As you know, the district has burdened past budget cuts. Every dollar that is cut from our budget is money that could be spent on programming and staff to better serve our youth. I know it will be a difficult legislative session in Topeka and I hope and pray for a plan that serves all Kansans.
In closing, around March 2nd, all registered voters will receive a special mail in ballot. You will have a question to answer about supporting our current LOB funding. It is important that you read the ballot and instructions carefully. Once completed, please place the ballot back in the mail. The ballot must be received at the Miami County Clerk’s Office by noon on March 13, 2015. We have established a link on our webpage about the upcoming LOB election. I will also be holding a public meeting on February 26th to explain the LOB budget. It will be held at 7 pm at the middle school auditorium.
The support of the Louisburg community has always been strong and I am hopeful that the community will, once again, show its support by voting YES on the upcoming ballot. This strong community support and sense of family is the reason I chose to raise my own family in Louisburg. Thank you, for your continued support of the Wildcat Family!
All My Best!
Dr. Brian R. Biermann, Superintendent
